Match Preview

Viktoria Plzen, currently 2-0 down on aggregate, welcome Sporting Lisbon to the Doosan Arena for the very first time in their history. The hosts face a near impossible task, and if Lisbon score first, Plzen will need to respond with FOUR goals to go through.
Everything looks good for Lisbon, but having conceded 2+ goals in three of five European away games this season, they cannot be complacent. Lisbon have also lost ten of their last 16 away games in Europe.
It is just a slither of comfort for them, but Plzen are currently on a winning run of six straight EL home games. They have, however, failed to get any further than the last-16 of the Europa League on their last two appearances in the competition.
Current trends suggest that this match is unlikely to end goalless, but in a set of contradictory stats, six of Lisbon’s last seven games have produced OVER 2.5 goals, while six of Plzen’s last seven have produced UNDER 2.5 goals.
Plzen’s only other competitive home match against Portuguese opposition ended in a 3-1 win over Académica de Coimbra back in September 2012. But the Sporting Lisbon of 2018 is far stronger, with a relatively high number of seasoned internationals amongst their usual starting XI.
Players to watch: One of those internationals is the pacy Colombian striker Fredy Montero. He scored both goals in the first-leg, and knows better than anyone how to unlock the Plzen defence.
Plzen striker Michael Krmencik appears to be his club’s best hope of progression. He has six goals from eight Champions League and EL matches this season.
Stat attack: It will be very tough for Plzen to get the two goals they need, but they’ve scored 2+ goals in 14 of 18 home games this season.
For Lisbon, this match represents the club’s first on Czech soil since 1978, when the side lost 1-0 to Banik Ostrava in the Cup Winners Cup.
