Two of the eight third-placed teams from the Champions League group stages that dropped into the last-32 of the Europa League (EL) go head-to-head at the Wanda Metropolitano, as Atlético Madrid host Sporting CP in the first-leg of their quarter-final tie.
Atletico, who won the EL in 2010 and 2012, head into the game on the back of claiming a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Deportivo La Coruña in La Liga last Sunday. Diego Simeone’s side will be aiming to make it five wins out of five in the EL this campaign, having previously swept aside Copenhagen (5-1 on aggregate) and Lokomotiv Moscow (8-1).
2005 UEFA Cup runners-up Sporting travel to Atletico after seeing their Portuguese league title hopes all but end with a 1-0 defeat away to Braga on Saturday night. Sporting’s road to the EL quarter-finals hasn’t been easy, making hard work of beating Astana (6-4 on aggregate) and Viktoria Plzen (3-2).
This will be the third meeting between these two sides in European competition. They faced each other in the last-16 of the 2009/10 EL, and Atletico progressed on away goals following a 2-2 draw in Lisbon (0-0 in Madrid).
Sporting have an awful winless record of three draws and nine losses from 12 games in Spain. Atletico have won five of their nine home games against Portuguese sides (D2, L2).
Key battles: Atletico’s skilful striker Antoine Griezmann, who served a one-match ban against Deportivo, has been directly involved (23 goals, ten assists) in 40.7% of Atletico’s 81 goals this season.
Sporting’s Bas Dost has scored a remarkable 30 goals in 40 appearances so far this term.
Stat attack: Atlético have kept a clean sheet in each of their past eight home games. They have scored in their last 16 matches at the Wanda Metropolitano, averaging 2.1 goals per game.
Sporting have failed to keep a clean sheet in each of their six away games in European competitions this season.
