Match Preview

After a long season in the Championship and 48 games each – Aston Villa and Fulham have earned the right to play under the Wembley arch for Premier League status. This match is known by many as the ‘richest game in football’, with estimated rewards of upwards of £160 million.
Both sides got through tough play-off semi-finals to get here – Villa winning 1-0 on aggregate against Middlesbrough while Fulham came from 1-0 down in the first leg against Derby to qualify after a 2-0 home victory.
Just five points separated the sides at the end of the regular season, although Fulham were in much the better form at the season end. The ‘Cottagers’ lost just one of their last 20 Championship games in 2018 (W15, D4, L1), with only four of those wins seeing Fulham concede.
Regardless of the result, Fulham have gone one play-off round further than they did last season. Ultimately, Fulham manager Slavisa Jokanovic believes that the recent experience of play-off heartache will be key in this game of a lifetime, simply stating: “We are playing a massive club, we know what we are going to face.”
This should be a tightly fought affair, especially if Fulham are sucked into Villa’s usual game plan. With every Championship play-off match so far this season featuring under 2.5 goals, Fulham need to go for it from the off and starve Villa of possession.
Players to watch: This could be loan striker Aleksandar Mitrovic’s final game for Fulham if they fail to win. He has scored 12 goals from 19 appearances since his arrival at Craven Cottage.
Robert Snodgrass has assisted Villa teammate James Chester for four goals this term. Snodgrass has the joint-highest number of assists in the Championship with 14.
Stat attack: Aston Villa have kept a clean sheet in five of their last seven games, but on the flipside, they have scored just one goal in their last three matches.
Fulham have scored first in five of their last seven games against Villa, who are themselves without a clean sheet in three clashes against the Londoners.
