Match Preview

In preparation for Russia 2018, Sweden welcome neighbours and fellow-Scandinavians Denmark to the Friends Arena in Stockholm for their 107th meeting in all competitions.
Against all the odds, manager Janne Andersson masterminded a 1-0 aggregate play-off win over Italy to take the ‘Blågult’ (Blue and Yellows) to their first World Cup in 12 years. After gaining 19pts in their qualification campaign (W6, D1, L3) the Swedes narrowly edged out the Netherlands in joint-second on goal difference.
As both countries prepare for Russia, their recent warm-up match records couldn’t be tighter (W1, D1, L2), with their respective four-game form identical if reversed (i.e. LLDW – WDLL). But bizarrely, each win and loss finished with a one-goal margin – furthermore, in four previous head-to-head competitive meetings, Sweden (as the home team) have won and lost to the Danes by a one-goal margin (W2, D1, L1).
With a slightly better qualification phase however, Denmark (W6, D2, L2) booked their World Cup slot after beating Ireland 5-1 on aggregate as second-placed qualifiers. With Peru, Australia and France waiting in Group C, Denmark manager and ex-Man City centre-back Åge Hareide will want to get his third career win over Andersson (W2, L4).
Highly unlikely to meet in Russia 2018, both teams would need to progress to the semi-finals to meet again; with that in mind, pundits and experts are expecting a low-scoring and conservative encounter – in six career meetings between these managers, are they due a stalemate?
Players to watch: Emil Forsberg has scored four decisive goals in Sweden’s qualification phase for Russia 2018.
Christian Eriksen has scored 21 goals in all games for Denmark – he has scored in every Denmark win for Russia 2018 qualification.
Stat attack: In 106 games since 1913, only eight meetings have been in European/World competition – with Sweden winning three fixtures (W3, D3, L2).
In WC competition (in total), Denmark have played 16 games (W8, D2, L6) – Sweden have played 46 games (W16, D13, L17).
On the first Saturday of June 2009, a defensive error saw Denmark beat Sweden 1-0 away (at the then, Råsunda Stadium).
