Match Preview

With Russia 2018 approaching, the Merkur-Arena in Austria hosts finals-bound Serbia (W3, D1, L1) against a Chile side (W2, D1, L2) still coming to terms with their World Cup (WC) qualification exit.
After coming through a tricky qualification group with 21pts, Serbia’s reward was a tough WC group of Costa Rica, Brazil and Switzerland. With Russia 2018 now under two weeks away, Serbia will want to test their mettle against one of the competitions surprise omissions. Since their 1-0 over Georgia in October 2017, the ‘Orlovi’ (SER) have played four warm-up games (W2, D1, L1) and face Bolivia next, before kicking off their WC campaign against Costa Rica.
Dispirited after their 3-0 defeat to Brazil, an unfortunate series of results manoeuvred Chile into a sixth-place finish in qualification. However, ‘La Roja’ (CHI) have soldiered on and have since beaten Sweden, drawn with Denmark and lost to Romania with Poland up next.
Known for their defensive qualities, Serbia coach Mladen Krstajić may want to use this match as a blueprint for their WC opener – with youth laying his foundations.
Having met only once before, Chile will feel the need to set the record straight after losing 3-1 to Serbia in a friendly in 2012 – will The Red One rain on the Eagles’ WC preparations?
Players to watch: Aleksandar Mitrović (SER) was in fine form domestically last season for Fulham and scored a brace in Serbia’s 2-0 win over Nigeria last time out.
Ex-QPR loanee Eduardo Vargas (CHI) has scored five goals in 16 qualifying games in 2018 – if played, can he trouble the inexperienced youth of Serbia?
Stat attack: Chile have only won two of their last eight games (W2, D1, L5) and failed to score in five of them.
Serbia have only been winning once at half time in their last seven games.
Both sides have won just two of their last eight friendly internationals.
