Switzerland will look to end their pre-World Cup (WC) friendlies on a high as they take on a stuttering Japan in front of the home fans in Lugano.
The hosts have been in cracking form with just one loss in 16 fixtures in all competitions (W13, D2, L1). Defensive solidarity is the name of the game for the Swiss who have kept ten clean sheets in their last 13 matches.
With a tricky group comprising Brazil, Costa Rica, and Serbia awaiting them in Russia, Switzerland will hope to put the final touches to their preparations as the fitness of key players like Yann Sommer, Denis Zakaria, and Xherdan Shaqiri will be under question.
Japan have been struggling ahead of this trip, losing three of their last four matches. They still have a friendly against Paraguay to play before heading to Russia, but head coach Akira Nishino has a lot to ponder including a decision on the back-three formation.
Scoring goals hasn’t been a problem for the visitors who have found the net at least once in eight of their last ten fixtures in all competitions. However, their defensive frailties that saw them pick up just one clean sheet during this process, are a headache for a side that is grouped with Poland, Senegal, and Colombia in Russia.
Players to watch: Xherdan Shaqiri (SWI) will look to build up his fitness as he looks to overcome last week’s injury scare.
Shinji Kagawa (JAP) is the most experienced Japanese player and his fitness will also be closely monitored.
Stat attack: Japan are winless in four matches (D1, L3), conceding nine and scoring just three.
Japan’s last seven away fixtures featured under 2.5 match goals.
Switzerland have kept seven clean sheets in their last eight home matches.
Switzerland remain winless against Japan in two previous friendlies (D1, L1).
