Match Preview

Germany begin the defence of their World Cup (WC) title with an intriguing encounter against Mexico in Group F. It will be El Tri’s (MEX) seventh consecutive appearance at the WC which includes reaching the round-of-16 in each of the previous six, while four-time winners Germany are making their 17th consecutive appearance and 19th overall.
Both teams are big favourites to progress to the knockout stages from the group, and a win for either side here should see the victors finish top. South Korea and Sweden make up the rest of Group F, but their chances of progressing are slim at best.
Despite cruising through WC qualification in impressive fashion – a 100% win record which included scoring 43 goals in just ten matches – Germany struggled during their warm-up friendly matches, and finished with a record of: W1, D3, L2.
Mexico meanwhile, finished their WC warm-up campaign with a record of: W4, D1, L2, which included an impressive 3-3 draw with Belgium. Despite the decent record, Mexico ended their preparations with a disappointing 2-0 loss to Denmark.
Competitively, the two sides have met five times before and Germany have won them all (inclusive of extra-time and penalties), including most recently a comprehensive 4-1 win to reach the final of the 2017 Confederations Cup.
Players to watch: Hirving Lozano (MEX) scored 17 goals in 29 matches for PSV last season, and after a decent pre-WC warm-up (two goals and an assist), will be hungry for goals. Timo Werner (GER) will lead the line for the Germans and has eight goals in 14 matches for his country.
Stat attack: None of Mexico’s last seven matches have seen both teams score.
Germany have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last five matches.
The last time Mexico were behind at half-time was 20 games ago when they lost 4-1 to Germany!
