Match Preview

It’s matchday three in Group F at the World Cup (WC) as South Korea and Germany go head to head at the Kazan Arena.
South Korea have failed to gain a point at this WC but still have a mathematical chance of proceeding to the next round. The team need an unlikely win against Germany – probably by more than one goal – and Sweden to lose against already qualified Mexico.
The Koreans fought valiantly against Mexico last time out but ultimately lost 2-1, courtesy of another penalty goal after they lost 1-0 to Sweden in their first game also due to a spot kick.
Having started with a 1-0 loss to Mexico, the Germans kept their hopes of progressing alive as they turned a half-time deficit and early WC exit into a thrilling 2-1 injury-time win against Sweden, and that was after being reduced to ten-men for the last 20 minutes!
Coach Joachim Löw admitted after the game how close they came to elimination and how nerve racking it was: “I haven’t had such a high pulse for a long time!”
Germany will qualify through the group with a win while a draw could also take them through if Sweden fail to win.
Players to watchHeung-Min Son has scored the only goal for South Korea at this WC – his 22nd strike for the team.
Toni Kroos scored the winning goal against Sweden in the 95th minute from a free kick, highlighting his leadership ability.
Stat attack: Germany have won just two of their last eight games (W2, D3, L3), while South Korea have one win in that time (W1, D1, L6).
The teams have met twice at WC finals, with Germany winning both.
Germany have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last seven matches.
In all competitions, four of South Korea’s last six fixtures have seen just one team score.
